Da diversi anni il fotografo ugandese Kibuuka Mukisa Oscar sta documentando l’energia dei b-boy e b-girls del suo paese. Il suo è un progetto fotografico in costante evoluzione, un percorso all’interno della scena break dance e hip hop africana. Un fenomeno che ha travalicato i confini nazionali per affermarsi come una vera e propria rivoluzione, finendo sulle pagine di molti magazine internazionali e in diverse mostre in giro per il mondo. La break dance in Uganda infatti è diventata uno dei fenomeni più diffusi nel paese, grazie a iniziative sociali come il BPU (Break dance Project Uganda), che ha rafforzato la scena, aiutando tanti giovani in giro per il paese. Ugandan photographer Kibuuka Mukisa Oscar has been documenting the relentless energy of b-boys and b-girls in his native country for several years. His lifelong project of showcasing break dance and hip hop culture in Africa has spread beyond the Ugandan borders and on to the pages of several international magazines and solo exhibitions at galleries around the world. Break dancing is the second most widely spread hip-hop element in Uganda. The initiatives like BPU (Break dance Project Uganda) have provided fertile grounds for the platform to flourish and for the scene to develop rapidly, supporting the youth across the country. DOCUMENTARY | CONCRETE JUNGLE: THE LOST DOCUMENTARY ON HIP HOP & SKATEBOARDING
Un recente giro sul web ci ha fatto riscoprire un documentario del 2009, realizzato da Eli Morgan Gesner, co-creatore del marchio Shut/Zoo York. La storia fece luce su una parte importante della cultura skate, che non era stata approfondita nella maniera giusta. Il documentario intitolato “Concrete Jungle”, esplora il legame che esisteva tra skateboarding e hip hop e mostra un mondo fatto di stili, tendenze, avanguardia e spirito autentico, prima che entrambe le culture si affacciassero nel mainstream e fossero indebolite dal denaro e dalla fama. Ci troverete interviste a numerose icone: Tommy Guerrero, Natas Kaupas, Chad Muska, Tony Hawk, Andy Howell, Paul Rodriguez, Terry Kennedy, Curren$y e molti altri. Gesner iniziò a ideare il documentario nel 2007, ma dopo oltre un anno di riprese e montaggi, l’azienda che lo commissionò chiuse e Gesner si ritrovò a dover abbandonare il progetto mai concluso. Molti anni dopo, la prima versione del documentario riemerge sul web. C’è solo una cosa che potete fare. Mettervi comodi e godervi questo prezioso testamento della cultura di strada.
A recent trip into the web led us to discover a unseen rough cut of a 2009 documentary by Eli Morgan Gesner, co-creator of Shut/Zoo York. The story illuminated a part of skate culture that was always in the air, but never properly documented. The documentary, titled “Concrete Jungle”, explores the connection between skateboarding and hip-hop cultures, and shows a world of style, fashion, edge and spirit that once was prevalent in both cultures before they broke out, together, into the mainstream and all the money, fame and dilution that comes with it. The film interviews several skate and rap icons: Tommy Guerrero, Natas Kaupas, Chad Muska, Tony Hawk, Andy Howell, Paul Rodriguez, Terry Kennedy, Curren$y and many others. Gesner had initially been approached around 2007 to make the documentary, but after over a year of shooting and editing, the production company that commissioned it folded and Gesner walked away from the unfinished project and never looked back. Seven years later and a rough cut somehow silently resurfaces on YouTube. So there’s just one thing that you could do. Sit back and enjoy this street culture’s valuable testament.

ART | MICOSCH HOLLAND: THE COLLAGE ASSEMBLAGE ARTIST
Micosch Holland è un artista tedesco, che adopera materiali vintage e li combina con strumenti digitali, rimettendo al centro del mondo moderno il Dada. Infatti, la sua estetica grafica è una freschissima reinterpretazione dei movimenti costruttivistici, dadaisti e surrealisti del ventesimo secolo. Il background da graphic designer, gli ha permesso di sviluppare uno stile tagliente, provocatorio e soprattutto l’amore per il testo e l’immagine, integrati in un universo digitale. In questo modo l’artista tedesco ha totale libertà artistica e crea fantastiche giustapposizioni, usando fotografie, immagini, ritagli e frammenti provenienti da nazioni differenti, del passato e del presente, che poi ritocca con svariate tecniche di stampa. E’ proprio questo che impreziosisce i suoi lavori e che regala loro una dimensione extra, un contesto nuovo, una prospettiva ibrida, all’interno del paradosso. Siete curiosi? Micosch Holland is a german artist, who pairs vintage materials with digital tools, to recreate Dada for the modern world. His graphic aesthetic is a fresh re-interpretation of Constructivism, Dada and Surrealism movements of the early 20th century. Holland’s graphic design background brought him to develop a sharp, provocative style and a love for text and image, integrated into a digital world, in which his artistic freedom gives him the space to create dope juxtapositions. Holland lives off found photos, images, scraps and fragments from different nations, from modern and past times, then the final image is retouched and combined, with various printing techniques. This is exactly why his works seem to gain an extra dimension, a new context, a hybrid perspective, living in a paradox. Are you curious? See more wicked works here.

DOCUMENTARY | WE OUT HERE: A LDN JAZZ STORY
All’inizio di quest’anno, la Brownswood Recordings, label di Gilles Peterson, ha pubblicato una delle compilation più importanti della sua storia decennale. Un’uscita che ha saputo dare visibilità ad freschissima realtà di musicisti jazz, che suonano a Londra. Giovani talenti che sono riusciti a plasmare un proprio sound, legato profondamente alla jungle, al grime e all’hip hop. La compilation è stata accompagnata da un documentario, ‘We Out Here: A LDN Jazz Story’, diretto da Fabrice Bourgelle e proiettato in tutto il mondo. Un film che segue la realizzazione del disco, catturando il viaggio di un gruppo di musicisti, cresciuti e arrivati sui palchi insieme, protagonisti di un nuovo suono jazz a Londra. Tra questi, c’è il sassofonista Shabaka Hutchings and Nubya Garcia, i batteristi come Moses Boyd e Femi Koleoso, il tastierista Joe-Armon Jones e molti altri. Un film sulla rinascita del jazz britannico, che parla di amicizia, di Londra e di come essa influenzi questi artisti e viceversa. Non perdetevelo, lo potete guardare qua sopra. Buona visione.
Earlier this year, Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings released one of the most talked-about compilations in its decade-long history, capturing a cross-section of London’s jazz-inclined musicians through nine original compositions. Highlighting the tightly-knit community of friends and contemporaries that has helped incubate a sound drawn from the jungle, grime and hip-hop vibrations of the city as much as the music’s storied heritage, We Out Here was accompanied by a 40-minute documentary that has been screened across the world since its release. The work of photographer and film-maker Fabrice Bourgelle, ‘We Out Here: A LDN Story’ captures the recording process of the compiltation and the journey of a certain group of young gifted players among many, who have trained and come up together, and whose sounds are now becoming an integral part of our musical landscape. These include saxophonists Shabaka Hutchings and Nubya Garcia, drummers Moses Boyd (whose second EP Absolute Zero was released on The Vinyl Factory last year) and Femi Koleoso, keyboardist Joe-Armon Jones, tuba player Theon Cross and many more. The documentary is not only about the renaissance of the London jazz scene, but also about friendship and London. How the city influences the artists and viceversa. Pubblicato da Destructure Records, Build Me A Bomb Records, Pissed Off Records, è un disco selvaggio, nichilista, arrabbiato col mondo, sparato a mille all'ora, con smitragliate di hardcore vecchia scuola. Registrazione pulita, sezione ritmica frenetica, melodie, riff travolgenti, chitarre abrasive, voce di un’urgenza disperata. We never get enough of Youth Avoiders. They’re a DIY punk band from Paris. These fellas play a very fast r’n’r/garage style of punk. Five years later their self-titled debut album, they released "Relentless" some months ago, pressed by Destructure Records, Build Me A Bomb Records, Pissed Off Records. It’s the fruit of a five days session in the Normandy countryside. To keep it simple, “Relentless” is a wild, angry, nihilistic record, with a barrage of old school hardcore. A frenetic rhythm section, twangy bass undertones, catchy riffs, melodies, inexhaustible drumming and sharp vocals. The clean recording does the rest. You should check tracks like ‘Face Up To It’, ‘Street Violence’, Martial Society’, ‘Ghostland’ and you’ll never come back. It’s a shitty life, but sometimes it’s cool as hell.

Diretto da Strictua, ‘Transition’ è un breve e meraviglioso documentario sulla vita e i segreti dello street artist Joos Van Barneveld alias DOES, conosciuto a livello internazionale per il suo stile pulito, la vorticosa scelta dei colori e l’attenzione per i dettagli. Ma quello che probabilmente non sapete, è che in Olanda è stato un calciatore professionista per oltre un decennio, vestendo la maglia numero 10 e giocando la sua ultima partita nel 2008. Ha vissuto una doppia vita, aspirando nel tempo a diventare writer. Quando si è trovato costretto ad abbandonare la sua carriera calcistica a causa di un brutto infortunio, gli si è presentata una nuova opportunità: focalizzarsi sulla propria arte. Rapidamente è diventato uno dei migliori esponenti della scena. Nel corso degli anni, il lavoro di Does si è diversificato, abbracciando i graffiti, le illustrazioni, stampe e pitture su tela. Non importa il medium, le sue opere trasmettono una forte vitalità - luminose, dinamiche e piene di energia. Dovete assolutamente guardare questa gemma di documentario, editing splendido come la colonna sonora. Da non perdere.
Directed by Strictua, ‘Transition’ is an amazing short documentary about the the life, secrets of the international street-artist Joos Van Barneveld alias DOES, recognised for his dizzying choice of colours, clean style and eye for detail. But what you probably don’t know is that he was a professional footballer in Holland for over a decade, wearing the shirt number 10 and playing his last game in 2008. He lived a double life as an aspiring graffiti artist. When he was forced to give up his career as a professional soccer player due to injury, it presented a new opportunity: the chance to focus solely on his art. He quickly carved out a reputation as one of the best exponents of the craft. Over the years, Does’s work has diversified into graffiti, illustrative drawings, prints and canvasses. No matter the medium, his works breathes exuberance – bright, dynamic, and full of energy. You absolutely have to watch this gem of documentary, great editing and soundtrack. Not to be missed.

PHOTOGRAPHY | MATTIA ZOPPELLARO: DIRTY DANCING
Mattia Zoppellaro è un fotografo 38enne di Rovigo, rappresentato dall’agenzia italiana Contrasto. Un curriculum di tutto rispetto, i suoi ritratti, i reportage sociali e di costume sulle tribù urbane e le cosiddette sottoculture, dai metallari, bikers, punk, ravers fino ai tifosi di calcio e i religiosi, sono finiti sulle pagine di importanti magazine del calibro di XL, Photo, Colors, GQ, El Pais semanal, Rolling Stone, Mojo e NME. ‘Dirty Dancing’ è il primo progetto che Mattia ha dedicato ad una sottocultura, quella dei rave party. Dieci anni passati a fotografare rave attraverso l’Italia e l’Europa. Quello che colpisce di queste foto è la particolarità dei soggetti e l’intensità dell’immagine che ne viene fuori, rafforzata da un bianco e nero molto marcato. Mattia Zoppellaro is a 38 years-old italian photographer, represented by Contrasto agency. He has an impressive CV, his portraits and social reportages show us the world of the urban tribes and subcultures, from the metal heads, bikers, punks, ravers to football fans and religious people. His photos have been published on important magazines like XL, Photo, Colors, GQ, El Pais semanal, Rolling Stone, Mojo and NME. ‘Dirty Dancing’ is the first project that Mattia focused on a subculture, that of rave parties. He spent ten years shooting raves across Italy and Europe. What strike us is the particularity of the subjects and the intensity of the images, which are strengthened by the use of black & white. Per l’occasione, ci ha regalato MIXINO#33, una cavalcata attraverso i territori house più profondi. 50 minuti di oscillazioni tech house, sapori soul, che si mischiano a ritmiche jazzdance, deep, lo-fi house, sperimentalismi destrutturati, passaggi breaks e electro visionari, il tutto permeato da una generale atmosfera 90s. Un sogno ad occhi aperti, il groove instillato. Vi torneranno in mente lontani ricordi ed esperienze ancora da provare.
