Milton Rogovin è morto lo scorso anno, a Buffalo, NY, all’età di 101 anni. Di professione ottico optometrista, di sinistra e per questo finito nelle black list maccartiste, detestava le ineguaglianze sociali. Girò il mondo (ma soprattutto i sobborghi operai della sua città) raccogliendo i volti e le storie dei più poveri. Qui sotto uno dei suoi progetti fotografici più belli: ritrasse per tre decenni consecutivi gli abitanti più poveri della sua Buffalo. Uno degli esempi più preziosi della fotografia sociale. Milton Rogovin died last year in Buffalo, NY, at age 101. He worked as optometrist, he embraced communism as a model for improving the quality of life for the working class and became subjects of the McCarthy Committee’s attentions in the postwar period. He traveled the world (but mostly the working class suburbs of his town) collecting the faces and the histories of the poor people. Here below, one of his most beautiful works: he photographed for three successive decades the poorest inhabitants of Buffalo. This is a great example of social documentary photography.
